モネの連作の一つ「積みわら」のうちの一枚。冬の荒涼としたジュヴェルニーの情景と積みわらが描かれています。モネは1890年から、ジヴェルニーの自宅周辺にあった積みわらを描き始めました。同じ対象物を異なった時間・季節に描くことで、移ろい変化する光・大気・天候の効果を表現しようと試みたのが「積みわら」の連作で、商業的にも大きな成功を収めています。

1899年から1901年にかけて、モネはロンドンに3度の取材旅行へ出かけ、テムズ川の霧の効果を描くことに取り組みました。こちらは夕暮れ時のウォータール橋を描いた作品。1904年には「テムズ川の眺めの連作」と題しデュラン・リュエル画廊に37点の作品が展示されました。

テムズ川にかかるチャリング・クロス橋と駆け抜ける列車を中心として、水面に反射する光と辺りを覆う霧の効果を描いた作品。1899年から1901年の間にロンドンに三度滞在し、そこで取材したチャリング・クロス橋、ウォータールー橋、国会議事堂をテーマとした作品を実に100近く描きました。彼はロンドンについてこう書き綴っています。「私はロンドンの、そのすばらしい霧が大好きなのです。」
